The Fairlight Strael: Review

The Strael is a modern road bike created by Fairlight Cycles. This Euro bike is made from high quality materials, features a contemporary design, and takes the individual rider into consideration with the creation of every bike.

Strael is Old English for arrow, missile, or dart. And this perfectly describes this cycle.

The custom shaped and formed Reynolds 853 main tubes, full carbon fork, steel frame, and excellent component parts makes for a fast but comfortable bikes. Taking into consideration the newest trend of larger tire widths, the Strael can house tires up to 32mm with ease.

Frame & Head Tube

The frame is made in partnership with Reynolds Technology. This custom shaped frame features butted tubing in order to optimize the performance of this bike. Each frame is hand built in Birmingham, England, and every tube is individually considered in order to remain lightweight and maintain a balance of stiffness and comfort for the rider.

  • Frame: Reynolds Steel

21st_century_steel_logo_strael

  • Head Tube: Reynolds 631 XX44
    • This oversized headtube allows for a 1.5” to 1.1/8th” tapered steerer fork to be used.
    • Head tubes are 1.2mm thick.
  • Top Tube: Ovalform
    • Top of tube measures as rounded at 25.4mm; then is flattened mechanically to create a 20mm x 30mm oval.
    • Horizontal plane (side to side) forces act upon this bike so the stiffness offered is equal to a round 30mm tube.
    • The vertical plane tube stiffness equivalent to a 20mm tube. This extra compliance helps to absorb upward forces.
  • Down Tube: Reynolds 853 Pro Team Bi-Oval.
    • DT is formed from 34.9mm round tube. Mechanically ovalized at both ends to become a 30mm x 40mm. However, each oval oppose each other from each side (meaning, they lay on different planes).
    • At the BB, the 40mm wide oval is on the horizontal plane, which creates a stiff area counteracting horizontal pedaling forces.
    • At the head tube, the 30mm x 40mm oval is on the vertical plane in order to resist twisting forces at the front of the bike.
  • Chain Stays: Reynolds 631, Round
    • The oval chain stays are great for creating chainring and tire clearance but doesn’t improve bottom bracket stiffness because they are ovalized on the same plane as the forces acting on them.
    • The chain stays are large and round at 22.2mm to increase BB stiffness by increasing the width on the horizontal plane.
    • They are narrower on the vertical plane than an oval chainstay.
  • Seat Stays: Reynolds 725 Non-Taper
    • No-Taper seat stays – maintaining a constant 14mm in diameter, it is small than normal by 2mm and will improve comfort in the vertical plane.
    • Heat treatment improves lateral stiffness

Fork

The Fairlight Strael is made using a custom Anrael Full Carbon. The geometry ensures that the rider can maintain a short axle to crown-length (381mm).

  • Fork Material: Full Carbon
  • Fork Weight: 365g
  • Stiff

Bottom Bracket

Press fit BB is the bane of most bike mechanic’s existence. This frameset is unique in that it is made of a carbon steel, uses a heavily ovalized down tube, a large round chain stay, and a 68mm threaded BB shell. This produces a frame that is laterally stiff but without the press fit.

So, if a creak-free riding experience sounds good, you’ll love this feature of the Strael.

Disc Brakes

Using flat mount disc brakes introduced by Shimano in 2015, Fairlight utilizes these disc brakes so that the calipers are inbound and sitting within the rear triangle. They are also lighter and smaller than previous types.

The steel frame invests in a cast dropout, which guarantees the correct position of the flat-mount caliper. The casting is stiff and eliminates the use of a thru axle.

Disc brakes will make it easier to brake later into a corner and allow predictable riding in the rain, for example.

Tire Clearance

  • Clearance: Up to 33c Tires (or 30c with Full Length Mudguards)

The Strael’s frameset is designed to fit larger tires, as the trend towards fatter tires continues for cross-cycling. You can bike with less pressure, greater traction, and on a variety of different road conditions with wider than standard tires.

Cable Routing

The Strael features external cable routing that is D12 compatible for those preferring a D12 build or who are upgrading.

While the trend in aero-construction is to route cables internally, for the Strael and most British riders, the servability-factor outweighs the need for aero advantages.

The frame includes D12 holes on the seat tube, down tube, and the chainstay. The holes are reinforced in order to reduce stress.
